1. Pages & Navigation

Picture
This is ONE WAY to organize your site navigation.  You will be playing with a couple of other navigation schemes later on.  Do not get attached to any one method just yet.  We will be looking at design principles later and you will be changing the way you handle site design navigation on a regular basis.  This first step will make all of your pages easy to access for now.
Instructions for pages to create are under the video.

Create pages on your site and organize navigation.  You will be creating and changing pages and navigation throughout the program, but you can begin with these pages and subpages:
  • Home
  • Identity (the two below should be dropdowns from "Identity")
    • About me
    • Credo
  • My Teaching
    • Classroom Management Principles
    • Assessment Principles
  • TRB Standards (ePorfolio)
    • TRB Standard 1
    • TRB Standard 2...
    • TRB Standard 8
  • Resources
  • Contact Me
Please do not use your email address... use the drag and drop "Contact form" tool in Weebly, which does not reveal your email address to the world, and will help keep email harvesters from using your email account to send SPAM.

2. Elements

Take one of your pages, perhaps the "About Me" page.
Add elements to the page and experiment with layout.
  1. Add a Title Element
  2. Add a Text Element
  3. Add an Image Element
  4. Notice some of the other elements available. Add another element.  Delete the element.  Move elements around... play.
  5. Play with the design of your page (Remember that you will be playing with design and layout throughout the program)  You will not be evaluated on your design at this time, but in your ability to add and manipulate the elements on the page.
  6. Publish and test.

3. Fonts

Experiment with fonts throughout your site.  Play with paragraph fonts, title fonts, header fonts...
You do not need to make any drastic changes; at this point you simply need to know what is possible.  If you do decide to make some changes, here are a few design principles to help guide you:
  • Fonts should be simple.  Fancy fonts are hard to read for extended periods of time.
  • Consistency is important.  Do not try to have different font families for all aspects of your site.
  • If you are selecting colours, ensure that the font colour is highly contrasted from the background (i.e. A light colour does not work on a light background.) Even medium shades of colour are to be avoided when dealing with fonts.  Go for high contrast colours, such as dark blue on white, or white on dark blue.  In addition, colours of fonts and backgrounds should be dull rather than vibrant.  A vibrant colour (background or font) makes it more difficult to read the font.

4. Settings

Picture
This activity has you simply watch the video so that you know what can be done in "Settings". Watching the video and remembering what you can do in "Settings" is all that is required.

  1. Publish the Site
  2. Submit to your instructor (In your submission, please describe what you wish your instructor to view and provide links to any specific pages.)
Wherever you are handing it in, it is important that you paste the published URL (site address) not the build/edit site URL.
EDPB: In GameLab find the "ePortfolio Step 2" Quest and follow the submission instructions.
B Ed: Hand in the URL according to your instructor's instructions.

Evaluation:
During the build process of the ePortfolio, it is important that you are not held back by waiting for your instructor to approve your work before moving on.  During the build process, your instructor will view your ePortfolio several times... but not for each activity and submission.  This is one of those activities which does not require instructor feedback, so please continue to the next activity once you have completed this one.  At this point, your instructor will be spot-checking, but you will receive credit for this work once you have followed the directions and submitted.  Feedback will be coming to you, but please do not expect feedback for every step of the process.

What your instructor will be looking for when spot-checking your ePortfolio:
  • Have you followed ALL of the instructions and directions from the tutorials AND the "Do It" instructions?
