1. Learn About Images

Picture
You may use:
  • Images that you created (photos, graphics...).  In all cases, you will want to reference the images so that folks know that the images are yours.
  • Images for which you have paid for their use.
  • Images which are not your creations but where the creator has given permission to use without payment. (Creator provides permission in writing, Public domain, Creative Commons...)
Picture
You may NOT use:
  • Photos taken by you which have people in them who have not given written permission.
  • Images of students.
  • Images of students.
  • Images of students. Period.  Got it?
    • Exceptions: It is great to have images of your students on your ePortfolio.  If you really want to include those, you will need:
      • Written permission from parents, or
      • You can take the shots so that nobody is recognizable. (Hands doing things, backs of heads...)
  • Images that were created by others but which you do not have permission for use
(Just because an image is found in a Google search does not mean that you have permission to use it in a public venue.)
In all cases:
  • You are required to provide attribution for the image, whether it is your own creation or not.  Providing a link to the Google image search is not attribution. Google is a search engine.
  • In addition, if others are the subject of, or are in your images, attribution should include a statement that mentions permission was granted (without mentioning names).

What does Avi do to include images on his sites:
  • Avi has found it easier to sometimes create or adapt an image rather than finding the right one.  Example: the images on this page are adapted Public Domain images.
  • One of Avi's favourite resources for free, public domain images (This means the images belong to the public.) is  pixabay.com.
  • If you are wishing to use Google Image search for your images, you will need to filter the results:

  1. Find and download a couple of images using the information provided above.  Remember where you are saving your images on your computer.
  2. Explore other image sites and resources.  You may wish to start here:  John Rampton's quick overview of Copyright categories. Not only does John provide some good sites, but he also provides some definitions for CopyLeft image resources.
  3. Try a Google search with these phrases or come up wish some of your own:
    1. best free image sites (This will give you a lot of photo sites.  Please be aware that Royalty Free usually means you are paying for image use.)
    2. best free vector image sites (Vector images are not photos... they are digital drawings and designs.)
    3. best free clipart sites (Usually vector images)
  4. Obtain any image attribution information you will need for any images you choose to utilize.
