TRB Standards Intro

Picture

The ePortfolio is designed to be an individualized representation of you and your achievements in the VIU Education program.  Many students use the ePortfolio as part of their resume; as a place to house resources and ideas for easy retrieval; as a class Web site; as a lesson plan and unit organizer; and much more.

The ePortfolio also forms part of the B.C. Teachers' Council (B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education) and VIU Faculty of Education requirements for graduation. You will be utilizing your ePortfolio in your PB Year 6 / B Ed Year 5 Exit Interview/Presentation.  One of the key elements of the presentation will be your ePortfolio section on the TRB standards and your Credo (Frame of Reference).

Let's start by setting up the pages you will need in your ePortfolio.

In your ePortfolio:
  • Create a TRB Landing Page on your site
  • Place a link on the page (as a button or image if you like)  to the Current Standards.  You have a choice between linking to:
    • The Web Page
    • The somewhat more detailed PDF document.
    • Or you may wish to help your audience avoid any need to click by placing the text of the standards right on your landing page.
  • Create eight subpages under the Landing Page - a page for each of the eight standards.  Your navigation should look like the one on the right, where you hover over the TRB Landing page and a dropdown of the Standards pages shows up.
  • Alternately, you can create an image gallery or button navigation in a section on the Landing Page.  This method keeps your navigation links on the top of your page cleaner. These methods were shown to you on the Headers & Navigation page.

You will work on the eight Standard pages as you progress through the program. The requirements for each standard page include:
  1. Two pieces of evidence for each standard, with
  2. Each piece of evidence accompanied by a reflective statement regarding why you chose that piece of evidence and how it reflects your understanding and competence in that Standard.
(Go to the TRB Link at the very top of the page and then to TRB 1 to see ideas for evidence pieces and criteria for the reflections.)
As you move through the program, you will be including many items into your ePortfolio, so you might wish to think about the standards with each item you include.  It is an easy thing to provide a link to that item of evidence if it is already in your ePortfolio.

PB 5: Each time you add to your TRB Standards pages, you may receive credit by claiming an ePortfolio Development Submission repeating quest.

Are you interested in how the TRB Standards connect to the VIU program outcomes?
Avi is currently working on a document to see the connections: Click here to view the document.

Important note:
According to the B.C. Teachers' Council (PDF document), the: "(s)tandards are not detailed descriptors of teaching competency or conduct. They are statements of principle upon which the detail can be built."  The VIU Program Outcomes address the Standards AND the areas of competence and understanding the faculty of education requires in new teachers. There is another set of competencies which we will look at later... these are the competencies one of our school districts has recently developed as a hiring matrix.  You can see this list if you wish, but prepare to feel humbled.  This is a working document.

  1. Publish the Site
  2. Submit to your instructor
Wherever you are handing it in, it is important that you paste the published URL (site address) not the build/edit site URL.
EDPB: In GameLab find the "ePortfolio Step 8: TRB Standards" Quest and follow the submission instructions.
B Ed: Hand in the URL according to your instructor's instructions.
